About the Monastery
Under the auspice of H.H. Pope Shenouda III , the Coptic Orthodox Church purchased St. Mary and St. John the Beloved monastery on February 1st, 2011. In September 27th 2018, Pope Tawadrous II visited the monastery. In June 13th 2019 the Holy Synod officially recognized St. Mary & St. John the Beloved as an official monastery in the Coptic Orthodox Church.
Before the Coptic Orthodox Church, the monastery was home to Benedictine sisters of the Byzantine Catholic Church. As the first Coptic monastery serving outside of Egypt. The monastery follows the coenobitic, or communal, monastic life. Consecrated for prayer and service , the nuns of St. Mary and St. John the Beloved monastery offer the prayers and meditations of daily monastic life in addition to aiding members of the community in addition to, respectively.
